Disco Mass in Vienna
On March 4, 2007, Fr. Gregor Jansen says a disco Mass for youth in Vienna. Above, he makes the Consecration of the Body and Blood of Our Lord under flames projected on large screen flanked by spotlights. Below, first row, in the glow of blue laser light he delivers his sermon.
In the second row, we see him in the center of the group seated at right on the stage under two different colored light shows. In the third row at left, he appears in the background framed by a rock guitar; at right, he stands under the screen while the band performs. Fourth row, Mass attendees move to the rock rhythm under changing lights, as in a discoteque.
It is hard to believe that a Catholic priest can consider such a nightclub atmosphere as an adequate setting for the Holy Mass, the renovation of the Sacrifice of Calvary. Still more astonishing is that this action enjoyed the endorsement of Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Archbishop of Vienna, and a dear disciple of Benedict XVI.
